9/24/2007 BOE Meeting Summary: Where's the Blend?
A Pasadena parent addressed the BOE on curriculum implementation, citing the abundance of TERC terminology in the new problem-solving strategy sheet sent home to parents. He also cited recent disturbing comments to the Pasadena PTA by Principal Paulette Miller: “...the math is Investigations with traditional algorithms for homework so parents can help.”
Other Public Participation highlights:
- NYC elementary teacher: MathSteps workbooks chosen at P-OB were rejected by NYC and are out of date
- Dr. Stanton from St. John’s : “...direct instruction is a proven way to teach math; it is the best way and should be used by this district.”
- District parent and Commack teacher: We need better parent-school communication. Commack teachers available by email, must do their best to return correspondence with parents within 24 hours
- SEPTA parent makes the case for wiring classrooms with assistive technology to help children with auditory needs
- SEPTA parent: limit IEP kids in a collaborative setting to 7 per class (as stated in district literature); some classes have 8 IEP kids
- Project Challenge parent: Odyssey of the Mind program not offered due to lack of advisor
