BOE Notes
Progress? Math Committee recommendations were made on April 23. Which math programs have been selected to be piloted for next fall? Have supplementary materials been chosen? Binders chock full of math support for teachers were recommended by the Math Committee. How are these progressing? The curriculum writing should be underway as well. An update of these important concerns should be shared with parents.
“An update on math” appears on the BOE agenda for 6/18/2007.
The Middle School Committee made a presentation to the Board of Education on May 21. Fifth and sixth grade math was addressed somewhat in the idea that math topics would be discussed in science and social studies classes. Details were not given whether math would be incorporated within the subject matter or be in a pure math form. Discrepancies between the team set-ups in P-OB Middle and Mattlin were discussed. Seventh and eighth grade math was not discussed. The Committee’s report will continue at the Board of Education meeting on June 4.
All three candidates endorsed by POBMATH have won seats on the Board of Ed.
- Lori Weinstein
- Gary Bettan
- Angel Cepeda
We still have a lot of hard work ahead of us. With three new members on the BOE and Dr. Brooks leaving the time is here to create a new math program that will benefit all our children and return P-OB as one of the best performing districts on Long Island.
We want to wish Lori, Gary & Angel the best of luck, and we will continue to give them our support. It will be a very busy summer. The new Math Curriculum has to be created, and we have to put accountability back into our district.
POBMATH asks that all the parents in our community stay active and informed. The more involved we are in our childrens education, the better their education will be.
We congratulate our “mathematically correct” newly elected members to the BOE,
Lori Weinstein, Angel Cepeda and Gary Bettan
We must stay active and bring in more concerned parents. Continue to play an active role in our children’s education, attend Board of Ed meetings and be informed.
The Short Story
A presentation was made by the Math Committee of their recommendations for math, including K-8 and 9-12 Regents changes. Administration, teachers and parent members on the committee participated in the discussion.
